An epic tale of love, survival and magic

Magical tale from the rugged coast of Newfoundland
Fascinating insight into an unknown world
Masterful prose – century-long epic full of myths
National bestseller in Canada, multiple awards

When a whale strands on the shores of the remote fishing village of Paradise Deep, the residents don't expect to find a mute, fish-smelling but amazingly alive man inside. The discovery of this mysterious person, soon to be christened Judah, sends the fishing community searching for answers while its most prominent citizens puzzle over whether he is human or animal, blessing or curse, miracle or demon. Although Judah is a shocking new arrival, Paradise Deep is already full of unusual characters. King-me Sellers, the self-proclaimed patriarch, has his sights set on an inscrutable woman known only as Widow Devine, with whom he has a decades-old feud. Her granddaughter Mary Tryphena is still a child when Judah washes ashore, but she is connected to him in unexpected ways throughout her life.
With his family saga and love story spanning a century and five generations, Michael Crummey takes us to a remote fishing village in Newfoundland where reality and myth merge, and once again proves his ability to combine historical depth with mythical storytelling.
